Compare Signal: Messengers, Builds, and APK Channels

Published: October 7, 2026 · Updated: October 8, 2026

Short answer: The website APK and the Play Store build are the same app from the same nonprofit. They differ only in how they reach your phone. If your phone has the Play Store, use it. If it does not, the official APK is your path. For other messengers, there is no single "best". Pick by what you actually need: privacy model, who runs it, and where your contacts are.

How the comparisons are organized

This section holds 22 comparisons in three groups. The first group compares Signal's own builds and download channels:

The second group puts Signal head to head with other messengers: WhatsApp, Telegram, Molly, Session, Threema, Wire, Element, Viber, iMessage, RCS, Messenger, Briar, SimpleX, and Discord, plus a best-private-messenger roundup. The third group covers practical switching: moving from WhatsApp to Signal, and Signal calls against Zoom.

A note on honesty

A note on honesty before you read any comparison: we are a Signal-focused guide, and we say so openly. That does not mean every comparison declares Signal the winner. Comparisons are written against five questions: what is the privacy model (default end-to-end encryption or opt-in?), who owns and funds the app, what metadata is collected, what features you actually get, and where your contacts already are. The last question is the one people underestimate. The most private messenger in the world is useless to you if nobody you talk to uses it. That is exactly why the WhatsApp migration guide exists alongside the WhatsApp comparison.

Two comparisons that confuse people most

Two comparisons here deserve a special mention because they confuse the most people. Signal website APK vs Play Store build settles the "which one is the real Signal" question. Both are real, and both come from Signal Foundation. But they use different signing keys, so Android treats them as different apps. You cannot install one over the other without uninstalling first. Back up before switching. Signal vs Molly compares the official app with Molly, an independent free-and-open-source fork of Signal from molly.im. It is a legitimate project, but it is not Signal and not affiliated with Signal Foundation. Know the difference before installing it.

You will also notice we do not compare "Signal vs Signal Pro." There is no Pro. Those files are scams wearing a familiar name, and the mod APK comparison exists to say that plainly rather than to review fakes as if they were options. Any site that lists "Signal Plus features" is either mistaken or lying; either way, do not download from it.

How to choose the right comparison

Start from what you are trying to decide, not from the app names.

One more piece of honest context: switching messengers is a social problem more than a technical one. The migration guide is deliberately practical. It covers what actually transfers, what does not, and how to bring your most important contacts with you, because a comparison that ignores the "but everyone I know is on WhatsApp" problem is not helping you.
